We need Volunteers for the 2026 Joy Who Lived festival!

The Joy Who Lived invites you to volunteer to help make our festival happen! If you can see yourself greeting audiences as they arrive, keeping our space accessible to all, lending a hand backstage, or even helping to decorate for community events and parties, we’d love to meet you. Past volunteers have gone on to become festival collaborators and artists, and have enjoyed continued friendship and community - and even unique career opportunities.

Volunteer FAQ

Why should I volunteer for The Joy Who Lived?

Amplifying transgender and nonbinary art is increasingly important with the whiplash-inducing speed at which trans rights are being systematically taken away by the current US administration. Supporting trans voices is not just a creative opportunity, but a moral obligation and an urgent need. In volunteering for this festival, you help us create opportunities to showcase important art, develop trans artists, and enjoy a space for our community to connect, learn, and evolve.

When do volunteer submissions close?

There isn’t an official closing date for volunteer submissions, but the roles we’re filling are limited. If you have the capacity to help but can’t submit until closer to the festival, don’t worry - we’ll let you know if we need additional hands!

What do I need to do to volunteer?

Just submit the form! Once you’ve submitted, our volunteer coordinator will reach out to discuss your availability and find the right orientation session for you.

When do you need volunteers?

The festival runs from March 31st-April 12th, with tech rehearsals tentatively beginning March 22nd. We may have some volunteer needs outside of the festival dates, including rehearsal photography, but most of our volunteer needs fall within those dates!

What do I need to have to volunteer for front of house roles or stage crew?

Your time, energy, and skills! Anything you need to perform the roles will be provided.

Do I have to be Trans/GNC/Queer to volunteer?

No, we love our allies' helping hands! This is a queer-centered space, so as long as you're on board with prioritizing support and space for the trans/gnc community, we're happy to have you.
